Jose Baez, 26, died from acute cocaine intoxication.Baez went into a medical emergency about 10:30 p.m. as deputy Justin Debode spoke with him about an alleged domestic assault against his girlfriend, Elizabeth Barclay.Baez died after slumping over during police questioning Saturday had five times a lethal amount of cocaine in his system when he went into a seizure, authorities said today.
Debode responded to the couple's Hidden Valley apartment, near Five Mile Road and East Beltline Avenue NE, and Baez was cooperative while talking about accusations that he fought with Barclay and damaged her car Thursday night.Baez sat in the back of a patrol cruiser and became incoherent after seizing and slumping over on his side on the seat. An ambulance arrived about five minutes later and took the suspect to Spectrum Health Butterworth campus, where he was pronounced dead.
Kent County Medical Examiner Dr. Stephen Cohle said today the man had a high level of the drug in his system.Police were unsure how Baez ingested the cocaine, but Stelma believes it was moments before he submitted to questioning.
